Characteristics of Sexual Violence and Pornographic Materials

Abstract

|
This study was conducted to provide strategies for the prevention of sexual violence by identifying characteristics of
sexual violence and pornographic materials. Extensive literature review on sexual violence and pornographic materials
was implemented. Dissertations, research articles and policy reports were selected and categorized in chronological
order, age groups and research design. Characteristics of sexual violence were categorized into 3 groups which were
prevention(perception, knowledge, attitudes of sexual violence and sex education), prevalence and coping strategies.
Characteristics of pornographic materials were also classified into prevent~on(perception, knowledge, attitudes of
pornographic materials and sex education), usage of pornographic materials and problem solving strategies. Middle school students were the most frequent sample of the studies on sexual violence and pornographic materials. Quantitative studies were more frequently implemented than qualitative studies. For the characteristics of sexual violence(prevention), those who had delayed prevention education, undesirable channel for information tended to have the misconception of sexual violence. The experience rates of prevention education for sexual violence were ranged from 63.3% to 85.1%. Most of the studies confirmed that education increased the level of perceived severity, knowledge and coping strategies for sexual violence. There were relatively few studies examined the characteristics of pornographic materials and adolescents¡¯ use of pornographic materials. Sixty two to 71.9% of the adolescents reported to have used pornographic materials. This experience had a tendency to lead to sexual violence. In recent years, the spread of pornographic materials was accelerated through internet. Problems coming from the pornographic materials expected to be more severe. Therefore, policies and education programs for the protection of adolescents from pornographic materials should be developed.
